CrowdStrike Addresses Recent Update Issue: Not a Cyberattack

In a recent post on Twitter/X, CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz announced that a corrective update has been issued to fix a coding error that impacted Windows hosts. He reassured users that Mac and Linux systems remain unaffected.

"This is not a security incident or cyberattack," Kurtz emphasized. "The issue has been identified, isolated, and a fix has been deployed."

CrowdStrike’s threat hunting operations director detailed the fix, which involves booting Windows into Safe Mode or the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE), deleting the problematic file “C-00000291*.sys,” and then restarting the machine.

The New York Times reported that the software issue coincided with recent outages in Microsoft’s Azure cloud services, though it's unclear if these issues were related. Microsoft later confirmed that the Azure problems were unrelated to the CrowdStrike update.
